Poems on the Buses Exhibition

Only one mirror in our house
Over the fireplace.
Signalling to my sister and me
The dangers of vanity.

‘Consider the lilies’
My father would say,
Quoting his favourite book,
‘They don’t need make-up’.

And now forty years on
I frown at my face in the mirror,
Wary of looking too long
In case my father is watching.
